Gilligan’s Island Press Conference: The Skipper Tells Castaways to Accept High Coconut Prices
At a media gaggle held after a recent Island Security Council meeting, the Skipper urged Castaway Island residents for patience as he resumed lobbing explosive coconuts toward areas held by the Professor. “The Professor called on me to accept defeat on Saturday,” he said, while pointing with a banana. “He is very evil.”
Progress towards peace talks around the strategic Castaway Bay remained halted, with no sign the warring parties were moving toward ending the conflict that the Skipper launched some five months ago.
In the apparent game of who blinks first – though the Skipper says negotiation with the Professor “is like chess” – his military rhetoric has also followed a pattern throughout the ongoing war. On many occasions, he has threatened to attack the Professor only to pull back at the eleventh hour.
“The Bay will be opened and closed only under Castaway Island Governing Committee authority,” stated the Professor, from an undisclosed location on the opposite side of the Island. “So long as the Skipper does not accept the reality of defeat and stop indulging in fantasies, I will continue to enforce the blockade.”
The Professor added that he had decided not to resume talks until the Skipper administration met conditions for shipping to resume that handled one-fifth of the Island’s coconut oil before the war. He also mocked the Skipper’s recent event where Gilligan quietly removed the Skipper from his hut, based on a low-level threat assessment. “The Skipper ought to worry about his own security rather than his endless bluffing regarding Castaway Bay; before he ends up hiding in a food hut.”
The Skipper downplayed the Professor’s demands. “We are low-keying it with him,” the Skipper stated. “We are only semi-negotiating. We are just watching the Professor’s regime with its huge inflation and the fact he has no palm fronds,” the Skipper said, referring to the Island’s currency. “It will work out. It always works out.”
The Skipper urged Castaway Island residents to accept slightly higher coconut prices while the conflict continues. “A tiny little bit more for your coconut oil is worth the cost of ensuring a very evil man could not have a thermo-coconut weapon”, one of his stated rationales for the war.
“After we finish defeating the Professor, who is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring Castaway Bay a territory of mine.” The Skipper went a step further to suggest that Castaway Bay is already his territory. “Essentially, that’s what it is,” he added. “We have the blockade. No canoes get through unless we want them to,” he said.
Throughout the conflict, the Skipper has alternated between threats of escalation and assertions that a peace deal is imminent. Meanwhile, the average price of coconut crude has surged, up 29% from a year earlier. He campaigned for reelection on a promise to lower energy costs.
Mary Ann, considering a potential run against the Skipper, is now seeking to make the war’s fallout an issue in the upcoming Island election. “Castaway Bay cannot be seized by a tweet or by issuing an order or by delivering a speech,” she asserted.
The Skipper scoffed at Mary Ann’s concerns. “What we’re doing is a great service for the world,” he said. “Not only for ourselves … and we’re really doing a great job!”
Meanwhile, Ginger led a vote of the Castaway Island Governing Committee to rein in the Skipper’s war powers. “This is a vote that requires us to find the strength to do what is right for the Island people,” she said, casually adjusting her sequined gown to catch the sun’s sparkle, “and to send the clearest, even stronger message to the Skipper that the Castaway Island Governing Committee is reasserting our authority over the war. This war must end.”
Nodding in agreement with Ginger was Eunice ‘Lovey’ Howell, who added that “banana and mango prices are soaring” and that it was “time for this war to end. Speaking of time, is it happy hour?”
The Skipper called the resolution “meaningless” and “unpatriotic.” Meanwhile, Lovey Howell’s husband Thurston Howell III, who controls several corporations with major defense contracts pending with the Skipper Administration, refused to comment.
Gilligan, standing at attention and holding a sharpened bamboo pole, said the Skipper Administration’s top priority in the war was to control coconut prices. “And then, obviously,” he added, “goal number two is ensure that the Professor never gets a thermo-coconut weapon.”
“I feel confident we’re accomplishing both of those goals, but it’s inherently an unpredictable thing, because the Professor is unpredictable, and he sometimes doesn’t honor the commitments he’s made to us,” Gilligan added.
The Skipper nodded in agreement with Gilligan, then took off his captain’s hat and repeatedly smacked Gilligan on the head with it. Next, he smiled and said “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
